The metaverse is a massive trend right now, with news and promises about the power of the metaverse splashed across social media and all major media headlines. The metaverse is the next evolution of the Internet, where you can use technology like augmented and virtual reality to immerse yourself in a vibrant digital world.
The world of Metaverse entertainment: concerts, theme parks and movies
Curious about how entertainment like music, theme parks, video games, and movies incorporate immersive technology and fulfill the promise of the metaverse?
Here are some of the biggest examples of how the metaverse is already shaking up the world of entertainment.
Attendance at Virtual Concerts
Thanks to metaverse technology, you can watch a virtual reality concert of your favorite artist and watch the action right from your couch.
Now we can use augmented and virtual reality to create effects like holograms that add incredible immersive experiences to concerts.
The ABBA Voyage experience in London is a great example of how immersive technology enhances the entire concert experience. The creators of ABBA Voyage recorded the group members performing their songs (the singers are in their seventies) and used artificial intelligence to make them look younger on stage. Now they’re using AI-generated versions of ABBA band members to create holograms that can perform on stage during the ABBA Voyage experience.
Meanwhile, online gaming platforms like Fortnite and Roblox are already hosting their own virtual concerts, featuring artists like Twenty One Pilots, Ariana Grande and Travis Scott. These virtual experiences have already attracted millions of viewers and we are likely to see many more performances of these metaverses.
Riding the VR and AR wave in theme parks
Walt Disney has announced its intention to build a theme park in the metaverse in the next few years, and we already have AR and VR-enhanced amusement park rides.
Universal Studios Hollywood will also import from Japan a Mario Kart-themed ride that uses augmented reality to create the illusion that the user is interacting with virtual characters and objects. The visor-like glasses will allow theme park guests to interact with the digital creations during the ride in real time.
A more immersive cinematic experience
We all love movies, right? Now they get even better.
Innovative directors and producers are already using AR and VR to make the movie-watching experience more immersive.
Directors can shoot 360-degree footage to help viewers feel like they’re actually part of the action. This is a great way to help transport people to virtual places around the world and let them experience what it’s like to be there in person.
Much of the technology that has been developed in video games is also used in the creation of movies. In the future, directors will be able to make movies where the content is generated on the fly using AI, and you’ll be able to interact with characters and settings based on your own choices. Everyone will have a completely unique experience because the personalized movie content will be generated specifically for you.
Many movies are also filming behind-the-scenes footage that can be viewed in virtual reality, so you can explore the set and see what happened while the movie was being made.
