Gaston Point native using his business to uplift community

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – Roy Magee owns Good Movers. It is a removal solutions company that started five years ago.

“We saw that there was a need in the moving industry for more labor, skilled labor,” Magee said.

He decided to meet this need, serving national van lines across the country. The owner of the business established a store in the community where he grew up: Gaston Point. It is an area known for crime in Gulfport.

“I faced some of these same elements and fell victim to some of them,” he said. “The culture of gangs, drugs, all that. But I thank God for Jesus Christ. I want to acknowledge the Lord because God put many good men in my way. “

Now, he is paying it forward, offering opportunities to those who have made mistakes, such as his brother, Leroy Magee. He had previously spent 26 years in prison. Now, he is making a living honestly.

“It brings you joy, happiness and also dividends,” Leroy Magee said. “So what I’m saying is this. It’s good, quality work.”

Urging young people in the community to avoid inconvenience, Leroy was sharing life lessons on Friday with a 13-year-old who was shadowing him during the day. The teenager has just lost his cousin due to armed violence earlier this month in the William Bell apartments.

“Personally, I grew up in Gaston Point,” he said. “I was born and raised in Gaston Point. I know what the youngest boys in the community are going through. To put it bluntly, I’ve been through it.”

The second chance given to the brothers goes a long way. Now, many Good Movers employees are people who have a past of cadres and want to move forward.

“If you’re looking for work or something to do positively, you can come to Good Movers and we’ll welcome you,” Leroy Magee said.

“God is a god of many possibilities,” Roy Magee added. “So who am I not to give anyone, as CEO of this company, a second or even a third chance.”

The company is always looking to expand. Good Movers currently has five locations in various states.
