A look at what’s happening today around seniors:
Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani carries a goalless streak of 21 2/3 entry to the pile when she starts in Miami.
Ohtani (7-4, 2.63 ERA) has won four straight starts, allowing only one run in that period. This year he has put up 101 in 74 innings.
The current AL MVP will launch a day after his 28th birthday. This will be his first pitching appearance of his career against the Marlins, who have won six in a row.
Los Angeles has fallen four in a row.
Houston right-hander Cristian Javier arrives with two incredibly dominant starts as the Astros get their ninth straight win when they host the Kansas City Royals.
In his last outing, Javier scored 14, the highest of his career, while holding the Angels to a hit in seven innings. The previous time, he pitched 13 in seven innings and combined with the Astros ’bullpen in a no-hits at Yankee Stadium.
The 27 total points are the maximum in a two-game period from a pitcher who only allowed one hit in the modern era (since 1900), ESPN Stats & Info said.
Javier walked only one batsman on this stretch. The 25-year-old has won three consecutive starts overall for AL West leaders.
Brayan Bello, the best pitcher in the Boston system, is set to make his Major League debut as he faces Tampa Bay at Fenway Park.
The 23-year-old right-hander has a fast ball at the top 90 mph. He has a 10-4 combined with a 2.33 ERA in Triple-A and Double-A this season.
Twice Cy Young award winner Corey Kluber (3-5, 3.91 ERA) starts for the Rays.
In addition, Red Sox ace Chris Sale is scheduled to begin rehabilitating Triple-A Worcester. The left has been down since spring training due to a stress fracture in the rib cage.
San Francisco tries to stop a six-game skid when he plays in Arizona. The Giants, third, have fallen 10 and a half games behind rivals Dodgers, who lead the NL West. Alex Cobb (3-3, 4.95 ERA) faces Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly (7-5, 3.46).
The Twins, leaders of the AL Central, will be less Chris Archer for a while after the pitcher was included in the 15-day injury list due to a tension in his left hip.
Minnesota made the move before Archer was scheduled to start against the White Sox. It was retroactive to Saturday.
The 33-year-old Archer joined the Twins during the offseason and has done well, with a 2-3 with a 3.08 ERA in 15 starts. He had only pitched six games in the previous two seasons due to injuries.
The Twins hope Archer can rejoin the club before the All-Star break later this month.
