Leonardtown is celebrating the 9th Anniversary of being named an Arts & Entertainment District

Leonardtown, MD— September is the 9thth Anniversary of Leonardtown receiving its designation as an Arts and Entertainment District. It has the honor of being the only A&E district in Southern Maryland. The city will mark the anniversary with a series of exciting events and happenings throughout the month of September, including concerts, art exhibitions, sidewalk art, Plein Air events and more!

The festivities begin with Art Walk 2022 on Friday, September 2n.d starting at 5pm on the first night of A&E’s First Friday Weekend Celebration. Head to participating local businesses around town to see fabulous artwork by local artists and vote for your favorite, then stop for dinner in town at one of our fine restaurants before heading to Leonardtown Square to enjoy live music by Higher Standards. The fun continues in LTown Alley on Park Avenue (across from Good Earth Health Food Store) where we will be celebrating Leonardtown’s newest and most unusual mural titled “Alice in Leonardtown” from 7:30-10:00pm with Balloons art. , crafts and themed activities: golf with pink flamingos courtesy of Above golf and entertainmentWhite Rabbit character games and dress up as your favorite Lewis Carroll character and take a photo with Alice from Leonardtown (courtesy of Ron Bailey Photo Productions). After the ribbon cutting, we will be showing the beloved classic animated film about a girl who goes on a wonderful journey (can you guess the movie?). The film will be shown on the stunning mural, created by talented artists Dan Ropp and Tom Rogers, which doubles as a movie screen. This event is the first of many fabulous evenings of outdoor film screenings being planned.

Then on Saturday, September 3rd, the beautiful Leonardtown Pier is the stunning setting for a day of creativity and fun. The day starts with 1St Annual sidewalk art contest where established and emerging local artists are invited to use the pier sidewalks as a backdrop for their artwork. Sign up for FREE at LtownMD@gmail.com or brandy.blackstone@leonardtownmd.gov in one of four categories (Youth, Dabbler, Family or Pro) to enter for a chance to win over $400 in cash prizes and giveaways. Participants will be able to work at their own pace by checking in anytime between 10:00am and 3:30pm, taking as much or as little time as needed to complete their artwork. The jury is at 4:00 p.m., and the winners will be announced at 5:00 p.m. during the afternoon concert on the pier.

The concert is the exciting season finale of the On the Water’s Edge music series at Leonardtown Wharf. This exciting series, sponsored by Jimmy Hayden of RE-MAX 100 and Homes for Heroes, is part of the Leonardtown Summer Music Festival. Running from 3-7pm, the finale is a Labor Day weekend party featuring local favorites the Robbie Boothe Band, John Zimmerman and Billy Breslin. In addition to incredible live music, attendees can enjoy wine from Port of Leonardtown Winery, beer from Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Departmenttasty food from the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliaryand sweets from Frog Town Ice Cream. As indicated, we will name the winners of the Sidewalk Early art competition during the concert at 5pm (just before Robbie Boothe takes the stage).

These amazing events featured here are just a highlight of some of the signature events taking place during Leonardtown’s Arts and Entertainment Month celebration.
