Former Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt has signed up for a new mission: helping his friend and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis win the presidency.
Laxalt is joining the pro-DeSantis Never Back Down super PAC as chairman, the group confirmed to Fox News on Saturday.
Officials with Never Back Down, which is the main outside group backing an expected 2024 DeSantis presidential campaign, said Laxalt had been unofficially involved with the super PAC for weeks and will now join in an official capacity.
DeSantis and Laxalt have a long history together. The pair were roommates during their days at the Naval Justice School, and both spent time in the Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) in the mid-2000s, before each two entered politics.
RON DESANTIS 2024 WARNING: “THE LEFT PLAYS GUARD”
Last year, when Laxalt ran for Senate in the battleground state of Nevada as the GOP candidate backed by former President Donald Trump, DeSantis visited the state to campaign with his friend. Laxalt narrowly lost his bid to defeat Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto.
The super PAC was founded earlier last month by Ken Cuccinelli, the former Virginia attorney general and 2013 gubernatorial candidate who later served as acting deputy homeland security director for the last two years of the administration. trump
PRO-DESANTIS SUPER PAC ALL MAJOR FUNDRAISERS
Super PAC officials told Fox News that his role as the group’s founder continues and that there are no changes to his role or responsibilities.
Word of the Never Back Down moves first came from a senior adviser to Trump’s 2024 White House campaign. Chris LaCavita took to social media Friday evening to highlight what he called a ” campaign reform” to the super PAC.
Although DeSantis remains on the sidelines in 2024, he is expected to launch a presidential campaign sometime after the end of Florida’s legislative session, which concludes next month. But behind the scenes, he’s already made plenty of moves to launch a campaign, including beefing up the staff in Tallahassee. And in recent weeks, he’s made campaign-style stops in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, the first three states to vote on the GOP presidential nominating calendar.
TRUMP BREAKS ENDORSEMENT, SURVEYOR, ON DESANTIS AND REST OF LIKELY 2024 FIELD
Most opinion polls in the growing race for the GOP presidential nomination show DeSantis in second place, behind only Trump, with everyone else in the field of actual and potential contenders in the single digits.
Trump, who launched his third bid for the White House in November, has repeatedly targeted DeSantis for months.
WHO’S IN AND WHO’S ON THE LINE: YOUR GUIDE TO THE 2024 GOP PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION RACE
Last weekend, Never Back Down released its first TV ad, a spot targeting Trump, which aired on “Fox News Sunday.”
And this past week, the super PAC began running a positive ad about DeSantis.
On Thursday, the group introduced messengers to early voting nominating states, explaining why DeSantis should be the next Republican nominee.
The super PAC took another shot at Trump on Saturday, “offering financial assistance to help him get out of Florida and move to his beloved California, so he can be near his good friend @GavinNewsom.”
Never Back Down’s attacks come after a full court press by MAGA Inc., the main Trump-backing super PAC, to target DeSantis.

A recent MAGA Inc. ad titled “Pudding Fingers,” which attacked DeSantis on Social Security and Medicare and mocked the Florida governor for allegedly once eating pudding with his fingers, garnered much national attention.
Super PACs, also known as “independent expenditure-only committees,” can legally raise unlimited amounts of money from corporations, unions, associations, and individuals, and spend unlimited amounts to support or oppose political candidates . Unlike traditional PACs, longstanding federal rules prohibit them from coordinating or contributing directly to a candidate or his campaign.
