CHICAGO (AP) – Manny Machado scored a single for his 1,500th hit and hit a two-run homer on a four-run night to help the San Diego Padres beat the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. 5.

Machado was one of five Padres with three hits when San Diego defeated the Cubs for the second straight hot night at Wrigley Field. Jorge Alfaro added a two-run homer and three RBIs while San Diego improved to 40-24 by winning his third straight and seventh in nine.

“It’s a big milestone to reach,” Machado said. “I just go out there and play baseball. Obviously, winning ball games is the most important thing for me and the goals will come with winning baseball games.”

And what about one day joining the elite group — currently 33 — that has reached 3,000 views? Machado is only 29 years old.

“I haven’t even thought about it yet,” Machado said. “Obviously that’s everyone’s goal. If I’m healthy, anything is possible.”

This sounds like a mantra for parents, who are suddenly moving hot, who are at the top of the top-ranked Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Jake Cronenworth and Jurickson Profar doubled each other twice and had three hits for the Padres, who remained one percentage point behind the Dodgers. Luke Voit hit a solo homer against Frank Schwindel, clearing the ninth, for his third hit.

“I think it’s fair when the guys get their name on the lineup, whether it’s for starters or a pinch, they’re getting big hits in important places,” Cronenworth said. “The first two months were led by Hos (Eric Hosmer) and Manny. Now I think everyone has come and we’re playing as a group, which is pretty dangerous. “

Debutant Christopher Morel had a solo shot and three RBIs for the Cubs, losing nine in a row. San Diego beat Chicago 35-11 in the top three in a four-game series.

Machado achieved his goal in the first and propelled the first race of the match. The five-time All-Star homer in the fifth was his 11th and crowned a six-run rally that ended the match.

Machado became the 17th player to make 1,500 hits and 250 homers before turning 30. He also had a single inside the field and walked twice in 3 of 4.

Interim coach Ryan Flaherty thought Machado was relieved to hit the mark.

“The next 1,500 will be even more special,” Flaherty said. “He’s been changing anxiously for the last few days, so it’s okay to get him out of the way.”

Cronenworth made two RBIs in his third straight three-hit game, the first time a father has done so since Kevin Kouzmanoff in August 2009. The 28-year-old boxer has nine hits at 14 on batting in three. games after entering the baptizing series. only .221.

The two starters, Caleb Kilian of Chicago and Ryan Weathers of San Diego, were removed from the minors to fill the gaps in their team’s rotations and struggled with control.

“We didn’t do very well,” said Chicago coach David Ross. “We have to pitch a little better than we pitched last night.”

Craig Stammen (1-0) threw two innings for the win. Kilian (0-1) was making his second start to the race.

After Machado’s scoring impact, San Diego increased their lead to 2-0 with Alfaro’s strength in the first.

The Cubs attacked the Weathers savage in the second. He walked two with the bases heavily loaded in races, and Morel followed with a single that put Chicago ahead 4-2.

After Kilian hit Ha-Seong Kim with a throw in the fourth, the Padres made it three times in a row, with Cronenworth’s second double, to advance 5-4.

The Padres added six more runs to the fifth to increase their lead to 11-4. Kim’s triple in the rally made two runs, then Machado’s shot to the left and the center finished it off.

Morel homered in the sixth for the Cubs, and the Padres opened it with five in the seventh.

Weathers, called up by Triple-A El Paso for his first outing since last August, allowed four runs and six hits while walking four.

The young Kilian, 25, was shaken in this, after a non-decision in his debut on June 4 against St. Louis. This time, the 6-foot, 4-yard straight allowed five runs and five hits with five balls in four innings.

Kilian was acquired in a move that Kris Bryant sent to the Giants last July.

The Cubs had a 12-game losing streak last season, August 5-16.

To make way for Weathers, the Padres opted for LHP Ray Kerr in Triple-A El Paso.

Parents: Interim manager and quality control coach Ryan Flaherty had no pre-match updates on any staff with COVID-19. Manager Bob Melvin, bench coach Ryan Christenson, RHP Mike Clevinger and LHP Adrian Morejon continue with coronavirus protocols.

Cubs: To put Kilian on the roster, Chicago placed INF Nick Madrigal in the 10-day IL with a left groin strain, retroactive to June 12th. Madrigal last played in New York on Friday against the Yankees. … Coach David Ross said OF Seiya Suzuki (left ring finger sprain) is throwing and has resumed some baseball activities, but is not yet hitting.

UP NEXT RHP Padres Joe Musgrove (7-0, 1.50) will face Cubs RHP Matt Swarmer (1-1, 4.24) in the series final on Thursday afternoon. Musgrove will roll five days off, and the Padres ’6-foot 5-foot ace has not allowed a run in two previous starts with five days off this season.
