A man has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing and sexually assaulting a 71-year-old woman.
The attack happened at around 2am on Sunday in Kleve Walk in Worcester, West Mercia Police said
A 56-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and has now been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault. He remains in custody.
The woman was taken to hospital in critical condition with multiple stab wounds.
Chief Inspector Brian Gibbs said the attack was being treated as an “isolated incident” with “no further risk to the general public”.
“However, we understand the impact the worrying nature of this incident has had on the local community and we want those visiting the town center tonight to be aware of the steps we are taking to help them feel safer
“The mobile police station will be located in the area with officers there to speak to the public.
“Additional officers will also be carrying out patrols in and around the waterway which will continue for the remainder of the weekend.”
He urged anyone with concerns to speak to a patrol officer or the mobile police station.
