The value of routine and mundane activities is only understood when one is unable to perform them as usual. Such was the state of a patient at the Meitra Hospital, who suffered a serious accident that paralyzed his right hand, restricting his daily activities. Our patient, a young man from Oman, who for 15 years tirelessly tried to find a permanent solution to his hand injury and finally found a cure at Meitra’s hand and reconstructive surgery department with the help of our expert surgeons.

In his own words, the patient narrates his traumatic experience of seeking a cure for his condition, where he consulted renowned reconstructive and super-specialist surgeons from around the world. He traveled to the UK, USA and Korea only to be disappointed after undergoing multiple surgeries and treatment options. Several doctors even advised to undergo amputation and some even suggested to be patient for another decade for innovations in medicine to emerge. Despite all these discouraging medical advice, his positive spirit and continued search for a better and perfect treatment led him to Meitra Hospital in Kerala where he finally got a ray of hope.

Our expert doctors from the Division of Hand Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery of the Bone Joint and Spine Department at Dr. Gopalakrishnan ML, Chief and Senior Consultant, Dr. Febin Ahmed PI, Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Vishnu Raja, Consultant evaluated him thoroughly and ensured a way to reverse his condition through a modern surgical procedure known as brachial plexus surgery . Together with the support of an expert technical team, our qualified surgeons lead the surgery.

The goal of the planned brachial plexus surgery was to restore sensation and motor function to the shoulder, arm, and hand, allowing the patient to perform basic activities with the involved right hand. The surgery was a success and the patient was discharged within a few days. This procedure allowed him to gain up to three kilograms of weight and also drive his car or bicycle. His happiness knew no bounds as he was able to use his right hand after 15 years! With sincere thanks to the Meitra doctors and team, our patient from Oman is now living a better quality of life.

(Dr Gopalakrishnan ML is Principal and Senior Consultant and Dr Febin Ahmed PI an Orthopedic Surgeon at Meitra Hospital, Kozhikode)
