“How we all look forward to those treats pedicures! An hour of complete relaxation,” said dermatologist Dr Gurveen Waraich, in a recent Instagram post.

However, before you book the following pedicure appointment, you need to consider some essential tips, according to the dermatologist.

* Never cut your own nails too short and on a curve, he suggested. “This could lead to ingrown toenails, a rather painful condition. Instead, cut them straight and then file.”

*Remember not to cut yourself cuticles. Instead, she advised pushing them back with a cuticle pusher. “Make applying cuticle oil a daily habit. If you don’t have anything fancy, just use castor oil. It’s just as effective,” she added, sharing that the cuticle is our defense against nail infections.

*The expert advises to always apply a base layer. “Don’t apply directly nail paint. This could lead to permanent nail staining,” she said.

*Lastly, don’t let your pedicurist treat your corns and calluses. “It could be a wart that requires a specialist. It’s important to find the cause and treat it accordingly,” warned Dr Waraich.
