The death of 89 Russian servicemen in Ukraine’s attack on Makiivka was due to the troops’ unauthorized use of mobile phones, the Russian defense ministry said.

“It is already obvious that the main reason for what happened was the ignition and mass use, contrary to the ban, by personnel of mobile phones in an area within the range of enemy weapons,” said the ministry in a statement.

It comes as military leaders faced calls for punishment after one of the deadliest attacks ever launched by Ukraine. Ukraine says 400 soldiers were killed and 300 others wounded in the attack.

Commanders were accused of ignoring the obvious danger after the Kremlin on Monday took the rare step of admitting losses in a makeshift barracks strike.

A popular Russian nationalist military blogger previously said the deaths were the result of ammunition being stored in the same building as a barracks, even though commanders knew it was within range of an ammunition-reinforced Ukrainian army of western nations.

Politicians also felt the anger. Sergei Mironov, lawmaker and former speaker of Russia’s upper house, demanded criminal responsibility for officials who had “allowed the concentration of military personnel in an unprotected building.”

Ukraine says 400 soldiers were killed in the Makiivka attack

Ukraine has said 400 of its soldiers were killed and 300 others wounded in an attack on a recruit college in Makiivka, in the Donetsk region.

Putin blamed the illegal use of cellphones by his own soldiers for the deaths of 89 Russian soldiers in Ukrainian missile attacks over the weekend.

In a statement on Wednesday, Russia’s defense ministry said four Ukrainian missiles hit a temporary Russian barracks at a vocational training college in Makiivka, the twin city of the Russian-held regional capital Donetsk. in eastern Ukraine.

Russia had previously said 63 soldiers were killed in the attack over the weekend.

It is difficult to confirm exactly how many soldiers were killed, and it is rare for Moscow to confirm battlefield casualties.

Putin to talk to Erdogan today

Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to speak with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan today, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Interfax, the latest in a series of talks the two men have held since the start of the war

Turkey acted as a mediator alongside the United Nations last year to broker a deal to allow grain to be exported from Ukrainian ports, but the chances of serious peace talks appear remote, especially as fighting continued anger
