Dozens of Russian soldiers have been reported killed in a Ukrainian attack
The death of 89 Russian servicemen in Ukraine’s attack on Makiivka was due to the troops’ unauthorized use of mobile phones, the Russian defense ministry said.
“It is already obvious that the main reason for what happened was the ignition and mass use, contrary to the ban, by personnel of mobile phones in an area within the range of enemy weapons,” said the ministry in a statement.
It comes as military leaders faced calls for punishment after one of the deadliest attacks ever launched by Ukraine. Ukraine says 400 soldiers were killed and 300 others wounded in the attack.
Commanders were accused of ignoring the obvious danger after the Kremlin on Monday took the rare step of admitting losses in a makeshift barracks strike.
A popular Russian nationalist military blogger previously said the deaths were the result of ammunition being stored in the same building as a barracks, even though commanders knew it was within range of an ammunition-reinforced Ukrainian army of western nations.
Politicians also felt the anger. Sergei Mironov, lawmaker and former speaker of Russia’s upper house, demanded criminal responsibility for officials who had “allowed the concentration of military personnel in an unprotected building.”
Zelenksy warns of new Russian offensive

“We must disrupt this Russian scenario. We are preparing for it. The terrorists must lose. Any attempt at their new offensive must fail.”
