Yellowstone actress Q’Orianka Kilcher has been accused of illegally charging close to US $ 97,000 (£ 82,000) in disability benefits while working on the TV show, authorities announced.
Kilcher, 32, of North Hollywood, is charged with two counts of workers’ compensation insurance fraud, according to a statement from the California Department of Insurance.
In 2020, Kilcher played Angela Blue Thunder in four episodes of the Paramount Network western, starring Kevin Costner.
He also portrayed Pocahontas in the 2005 film The New World and went to Dora and the Lost City of Gold 2019.
While working at Dora in October 2018, Kilcher injured his right neck and shoulder, the insurance department said.
A year later, Kilcher told a doctor who was handling the insurance claim that he had been offered a job but could not accept it due to severe neck pain from his injury, according to the department’s statement. of insurance.
From 2019 to 2021, Kilcher received $ 96,838 (£ 81,660) in temporary disability benefits.
But an investigation later found that Kilcher had worked in Yellowstone for several months in 2019 during the period he claimed to be disabled, the department said.
“According to records, he returned to the doctor and began receiving disability benefits five days after the last time he worked at the program,” the statement says.
Kilcher surrendered and was tried on charges in May, according to the statement.
In a statement, his lawyer, Michael Becker, said Kilcher was a passenger in a production vehicle when he was injured.
“Third-party doctors verified her injury and entitlement to benefits. Ms Kilcher was at all times sincere with her doctors and treatment providers … and never intentionally accepted benefits to which she did not believe she was entitled. Becker said.
Kilcher “will vigorously defend himself and demand that he be granted the presumption of innocence both inside and outside the court,” he added.
